LOCAL HOUSING ALLOWANCE REDUCTION

Under Welfare Reforms the local Housing Allowance level from April 2011 has been reduced to the 30th percentile. This means around a third of the private rented accommodation within the Conwy Borough is now affordable for a person receiving Housing Benefit. This used to be set at the 50th percentile which made half of the accommodation affordable. This change has already applied to private rented sector tenants making a new Housing Benefit claim from April 2011 onwards. However, private rented sector tenants in receipt of Housing Benefit up to and including April 2011 were allowed a period of 9 months protection from the anniversary date of their Housing Benefit claim.

As 9 months has now passed for customers with an anniversary date of the 4th April 2011 the reductions will start applying from the 9th January 2012 onwards.

Please contact the Housing Benefit Section on telephone number 01492 576491 if you require any more detail.
